Mr. Datz began his legal career in August 2001 as an Assistant State Attorney with the State Attorney’s Office in Miami-Dade, Florida, where he prosecuted over 3000 criminal defendants for crimes ranging from simple misdemeanors to the most serious felonies, including firearm crimes, crimes-against-children, sexual assault, drug trafficking, and murder. Mr. Datz served as lead counsel in over 30 criminal jury trials and 45 juvenile delinquency bench trials. Mr. Datz handled up to 300 cases at a time in the felony, juvenile, and misdemeanor divisions.
In late-2006, Mr. Datz was hired as a Deputy District Attorney at Colorado’s 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, serving Broomfield and Adams Counties. In December 2011, Mr. Datz was promoted to the position of Senior Deputy District Attorney, a position he held until founding The Datz Law Firm in May 2013. During his time with the District Attorney’s office, Mr. Datz served as lead trial counsel in over 35 jury trials, with the highest proportion of those trials dealing with felony-level offenses against children, such as sexual assault and physical abuse resulting in either serious bodily injury or death.
From January 2007 through July 2011, Mr. Datz served in Broomfield County, where he prosecuted thousands of criminal defendants for crimes ranging from simple misdemeanors to first-degree murder. He was directly responsible for all aspects of trial litigation; including investigation, bond hearings, arraignments, discovery, evidentiary motions, witness preparation, jury trials, bench trials, sentencing hearings, and post-trial litigation. During his service in Broomfield, Mr. Datz became attached to the Broomfield community and its citizens, ultimately deciding to permanently settle in Broomfield with his wife and two young boys.
In February 2011, Mr. Datz was chosen to serve as one of three prosecutors in the elite Child Victim Unit, which exclusively handles serious felony crimes against children, including sexual abuse, physical abuse, and sexual exploitation. In this role, he interacted with children of all ages, including children affected by a wide spectrum of emotional, physical, and mental disorders and disabilities. In total, Mr. Datz has over a decade of trial experience.
